Massage Therapy Myths That Are Far From the Truth

Massage therapy is one of those treatments that is surrounded by many myths. It can be confusing to those who are either new to massage or have not experienced it enough to differentiate between myth and truth.

A number of benefits can be gained by massage therapy, but doubts can settle in due to myths being shared. We are debunking a few common myths that are far from being the truth to clear those doubts and allow you to relax and enjoy your massage!

Myth 1: The Benefits Are Only Temporary

The first common myth that we come across often is that the benefits of massage therapy are only temporary. A good therapist will address more than just temporary issues. He or she will want you to feel better even after the effects wear off.

Muscles have a long memory. Our daily habits such as sitting at a desk for long periods of time can cut off nerve pathways. This leads to neck and shoulder tension, upper back, or numbness through the hands.

Visiting a good therapist regularly will allow them to correct those pain patterns and re-educate the muscles to improve mechanics and posture.

Myth 2: Do Not Interrupt Your Massage Therapist, Even if It Hurts

Massage therapists use pressure to release muscle tissue “knots”. The feeling can be painful but it should feel therapeutic. Speak up to your massage therapist if the pain feels wrong or overly intense.

Your therapist will usually ask you whether the pressure is okay before continuing your massage. Do not hesitate to let them know how you are feeling. He or she will make adjustments to their technique accordingly.

Myth 3: All Massages Are the Same

Every type of massage has different benefits. While a Swedish massage is for relaxation, a deep tissue massage on the other hand is to treat musculoskeletal issues. Licensed therapists are trained to focus on problem areas and advise you on which therapy is best suited to your needs.

You may go in with headache issues but find out that the problem is rooted in your shoulders. A good massage therapist, with the help of a medical professional, will identify the root cause of the issues that you are facing to recommend the best treatment.

Myth 4: You Must Be Sore Afterwards, or It Was Ineffective

There is a belief that treatments need to be hard to go through for them to be effective. It is often the same for massage therapy. Patients sometimes expect muscle soreness before they are convinced that they had a good massage.

Muscle soreness is more likely to happen if the muscle is not used to activity. Soreness is an indication of healing. People who get regular massages or have a very active lifestyle will experience less discomfort, but they are still reaping all the benefits of massage therapy.

Myth 5: Massages Can Eliminate Cellulite

Cellulite is subcutaneous fat under the skin that causes a dimple-like appearance on the skin. Massage therapy will not eliminate fat, but it can prepare your muscle for exercise.

The way to lose fat and decrease the appearance of cellulite is to regularly exercise and have a clean diet. Massage therapy can only assist your muscles by helping recovery.
